The National Museum of Locri Epizefiri
The National Museum of Locri Epizefiri was founded in 1998 and is based on the preceding Antiquarium which had been realised in 1971. It is located near the archaeological area with the specific aim of integrating visits to the dig with the immediate opportunity of viewing the finds which it has uncovered. Essentially, the material comes from the investigations that the archaeological superintendency has carried out from the 1970’s to the present, given that the fruits of preceding campaigns, above all the work of P. Orsi, have been transferred to the national Museum of Reggio Calabria. There are, nonetheless, important objects from local private collections which had already been part of a civic museum, instituted in 1914 and whose provenance it has often been possible to ascertain.
The layout respects topographical criteria, with distinct sectors dedicated to the necropoleis, to the sanctuaries outside the city, the inhabited area, and the public and sacred buildings within the urban confine. The rich array of material (grave goods, votive offerings dedicated in the sanctuaries, vases for daily use, tools for artisan and domestic use) is gradually renewed thanks to research carried out each year at a planning level and through emergency intervention. A visit to the museum allows one to reconstruct the modality of the running of everyday life in an ancient Greek colony in Magna Grecia in its many aspects, from economic and domestic activities to the sphere of religion and funeral rites.
